Poker is indeed a popular game. But is it legal? Today a lot of poker games are available online and a person can play it within the vicinity of his home. Poker is a form of gambling and some might have doubts about poker when it comes to the rules and regulations and the legality of the game.
Sports betting is not similar to poker but still a lot of people judge against both the games. The only similarity is that both use skills and chance in winning it. But it is limited to this function only. Poker allows its players to play online without any hassles or restrictions by the court. There are no such laws as to stop the game of poker anywhere and no player has been brought to court just because he/she played online poker. But what may happen in future, we do not know. With growing popularity, court may put up some restrictions to it.
It is not any sport of betting where a person might be convicted for his/her acts. He/she is a poker player legally playing online poker by signing up and depositing money.
The Wire Act can be understood in several conduct. The legality of poker depends on country to country as well. For example, people in US do not consider poker as illegal. Poker is a game that is liked  by many people there. But year 2006 saw the congress considering it a crime for any financial organization to transmit cash to any poker or gambling website over the internet. However, it gave no laws regarding the game of poker as illegal or about any player playing poker.
Also, as per Professor I. Nelson Rose, US rules do not stop poker in or outside US. Wire Act makes people think that poker might  be an illegal game and an illegal form of gambling. But as mentioned above, it does not restrict a player from joining poker sites or consider it illegal. And then also the law is not applicable for a normal player playing poker. The law is meant only for those who are into betting.
